Redesign of Schillerplatz

As part of the urban redevelopment program “Active City Center Kaiserslautern”, Schillerplatz—a key link between the northern part of the city and the downtown area—underwent a comprehensive redesign. The goal of the project was to create a modern, functional, and high-quality public space that would permanently meet the needs of a vibrant downtown.

The redesigned square covers approximately 3,500 m² and was reopened to the public in May 2021 after a construction period of about two years.

Requirements and Challenges

In addition to the high design requirements, the durability of the entire paving structure played a central role. The surface was to be designed to be resilient in the long term, easy to maintain, and visually appealing. At the same time, movements within the surface had to be reliably accommodated to permanently prevent damage and stress cracks.

Furthermore, close coordination between planning, execution, and technical support was required to ensure the high quality of the overall structure.

ROMEX® Solution

A complete ROMEX® system solution was chosen for the project. The following products were used:

• ROMPOX® - TRASS BEDDING as bedding mortar
• ROMPOX® - ADHESIVE SLURRY as an adhesive bridge
• ROMPOX® - D2000 for joint sealing
• ISATEC® - FLEX as a viscoelastic expansion joint

When installed and processed properly, ROMEX® offers a 5-year system warranty (RSG) for this system.

The use of ISATEC® - FLEX as an expansion joint was particularly highlighted. According to the foreman in charge, this allowed for significantly better results than with conventional silicone joints.

The contractor was trained by ROMEX®’s technical service and additionally supported by the field service throughout the entire project.
