Heavy-duty paving stones grouted with ISATEC® - FLEX

Europaplatz is a new urban district in the heart of Heidelberg that combines living, working, and leisure in an urban atmosphere. The approximately 9,000 m² central plaza forms the heart of the area. Scheduled to open in September 2024, the plaza serves as a forward-looking example of multifunctional urban design.

Initial Situation and Requirements

The square was paved with heavy-duty pavers measuring 60 × 60 × 16 cm. Due to the loose-laid construction method, a solid jointing system was not feasible. Nevertheless, the jointing material had to meet the highest standards for load-bearing capacity, ease of cleaning, durability, and water permeability.

Solution with ROMEX®

Following intensive consultation between the planning office, the City of Heidelberg, the contractor Gramenz GmbH, and the ROMEX® project department, the decision was made to use ISATEC® - FLEX – a viscoelastic special joint specifically developed for unbound construction methods. It combines several key advantages: Its viscoelastic properties enable reliable compensation for dynamic loads, while its water permeability prevents waterlogging and promotes targeted infiltration. Furthermore, the material is street-sweeper-resistant and thus ideally suited for high-traffic urban areas. Thanks to its long-term stability, ISATEC® - FLEX significantly reduces maintenance requirements and contributes sustainably to maintaining a well-kept appearance. Installation was carried out by trained specialists from Gramenz GmbH. The on-time completion was the result of close collaboration among all project participants.
