In-City Joint Repair with ISATEC® - FLEX
As part of a comprehensive urban renewal program, the central pedestrian zone in the city of Feldkirch was modernized. The goal of the project was to enhance the public space both functionally and aesthetically while also helping to improve the microclimate in the city center.
A special pavement structure was designed to better dissipate urban heat and noticeably improve the quality of the environment in the densely built-up center. At the same time, the surfaces had to be durable, low-maintenance, and suitable for daily inner-city use.
The city placed particular emphasis on closed and stable joints to prevent the accumulation of cigarette butts, broken glass, and other debris in the joints. This was intended not only to improve cleanliness in public spaces but also to ensure a consistently well-maintained cityscape.
The technical challenge was to find a joint solution that is both elastic and resilient. Especially in high-traffic downtown pedestrian zones with occasional city traffic and potential movement in the pavement, the joint must function reliably over the long term without promoting cracking or joint failure.
In close consultation with the local ROMEX® representative and the city administration, it was decided to use the two-component special joint mortar ISATEC® - FLEX.
ISATEC® - FLEX combines elasticity with high strength and is particularly suitable for unbound paving systems. The viscoelastic material structure allows it to absorb slight movements within the paved area. This reduces the risk of cracking and joint failure—a significant advantage for the longevity of the pavement.
At the same time, ISATEC® - FLEX impresses with its high durability in daily inner-city use. The joint remains closed, reduces dirt accumulation, and contributes to a permanently well-maintained, safe, and user-friendly surface.
The redesigned pedestrian zone in Feldkirch demonstrates how technical functionality, sustainability, and urban design can be effectively combined. ISATEC® - FLEX was used to provide a future-proof joint solution that can accommodate movement in the pavement, reduces dirt buildup, and permanently meets the demands of a vibrant inner-city space.
The result is a durable, low-maintenance, and climate-adapted surface that contributes to enhancing the quality of life in public spaces.
