Renovation of Kolegiacki Square – with a focus on pedestrians and cyclists
Kolegiacki Square in Poznań is one of the oldest and most historic sites in the center of this major Polish city. Named after the nearby Collegiate Church of St. Mary Magdalene, the square is a significant historical and urban landmark. The goal of the recent renovation was to preserve the historic atmosphere while improving functionality and the quality of the public space for a modern urban community.
Requirements and Challenges
The project was planned in accordance with strict historic preservation guidelines. The challenge was to enhance the square’s design without losing its original character. At the same time, the infrastructure needed to be modernized sustainably—especially for pedestrians and cyclists. Barrier-free design and improved accessibility played a central role in this. The materials used had to blend harmoniously into the cityscape while also being durable and resilient.
ROMEX® Solution
The two-component synthetic resin joint mortar ROMPOX® - D1 was used for the permanent jointing of the natural stone paving areas. The material is ideally suited for use in historically sensitive areas, as it creates a closed, slip-resistant surface while also being water-permeable and resistant to frost and de-icing salt. This not only improves ease of maintenance but also ensures the long-term stability of the surface. The work was carried out in sections and in close coordination with the relevant authorities and specialist planners. A total of approximately 4,500 m² of surface area was re-grouted—while preserving the historic appearance of the paving.
• A historically appropriate solution featuring a modern joint system
• A seamless, water-permeable, and slip-resistant surface
• Improved comfort for pedestrians and cyclists
• Use of historically appropriate materials with high durability
• Contribution to sustainable urban development in the center of Poznań
The renovation of Kolegiacki Square serves as a prime example of how historic urban structures can be carefully modernized. ROMPOX® - D1 was chosen as the jointing material because it successfully combines functionality, aesthetics, and historic preservation—creating a sustainable urban landscape with cultural depth.
