New stalls for Offenbach’s historic weekly market

Wilhelmsplatz in Offenbach am Main is one of the city’s most famous downtown squares and has served as the site of Offenbach’s traditional weekly market for over 100 years. To ensure the long-term functionality and traffic safety of this heavily used paved area, the square underwent extensive renovation in September 2025.

The focus of the project was on renewing the existing paving joints across an area of approximately 4,100 m².

Requirements and Challenges

The existing paved area showed significant damage in the joint areas. The loose joint material previously used had been washed out and eroded over the years, causing the paving stones to shift and, in some cases, become damaged. The goal of the renovation was to permanently stabilize the area while minimizing disruption to the popular weekly market.

A particular challenge was therefore carrying out the work in phases. The renovation was carried out in three construction phases, allowing large parts of the square to remain open for ongoing market operations.

ROMEX® Solution

For the renovation, the City of Offenbach opted for the two-component paving joint mortar ROMPOX® - D2000. The decisive factors were its high load-bearing capacity, the quick reopening to traffic, and the positive experiences from comparable projects in other cities.

During the work, the existing joints were scraped out to about two-thirds of the stone’s height and then repointed. A total of approximately 45 tons of ROMPOX® - D2000 was used. Thanks to its rapid curing, the area could be reopened after about 24 hours—a decisive advantage for heavily trafficked inner-city areas.
