Modern technology meets traditional craftsmanship

Joint Repair with ROMPOX® - D2000 and ROMPOX® - VERKEHR V2

The downtown area of Ljubljana is one of Slovenia’s most significant historic urban spaces. The central area around Prešeren Square and the famous Three Bridges—known in Slovenian as Tromostovje—is particularly distinctive. This architectural ensemble is one of the city’s most famous landmarks and connects the historic Old Town with the adjacent streets, squares, and pedestrian areas.

Since 2007, the areas paved with natural stone in this central downtown area have been undergoing continuous renovation. In total, the project covers approximately 10,000 m² of paved area.

Requirements and Challenges

The renovation of the downtown areas placed high demands on materials, workmanship, and durability. As a heavily trafficked public space, the area around Prešeren Square is used daily by pedestrians, tourists, residents, delivery vehicles, and municipal cleaning vehicles.

At the same time, the historical and architectural character of the natural stone paving had to be preserved. The jointing solution therefore needed to be durable, enhance the high-quality appearance of the paved areas, and reduce maintenance requirements during ongoing downtown operations. It was particularly important to find a solution that would withstand washout, displacement, and mechanical stress over the long term.

ROMEX® Solution

For the renovation of the natural stone paving areas, the ROMEX® paving joint mortars ROMPOX® - D2000 and ROMPOX® - VERKEHR V2 were used. Both products are designed for heavily used paving areas and are particularly suitable for public spaces with high traffic and regular vehicle loads.

The solid jointing permanently replaces loose joint material. This reduces washout, prevents material loss, and helps stabilize the paving surface. At the same time, the character of the natural stone paving is preserved—a crucial factor in a historically sensitive urban area such as downtown Ljubljana.

The ongoing restoration since 2007 demonstrates that the ROMEX® products used have proven their worth over the long term in the demanding conditions of downtown operation.
