The 95th Giro d’Italia kicks off on new pavement

Stylish Redevelopment of Herning's Downtown Area Using Natural Stone

The Danish city of Herning in Jutland is regarded as a modern, youthful, and sports-loving city with international appeal. In 2012, Herning came into the public spotlight when it hosted the start of the 95th Giro d’Italia. In the wake of this major international event, large parts of the city center were extensively redesigned and modernized.

A central component of the redesign was the high-quality paving of the downtown areas with natural stone surfaces covering a total area of over 3,000 m². The result is a modern yet timeless cityscape that combines functionality with architectural design.

Requirements and Challenges

The redesigned downtown areas had to meet both high aesthetic standards and withstand the daily stresses of urban life. In addition to pedestrian traffic and inner-city use, the long-term stability of the paving surfaces played a particularly crucial role.

Special attention was paid to the combination of different paving materials: large-format natural stone slabs were combined with small-format natural stone pavers and arranged into an intricate laying pattern. At the same time, the surfaces had to be designed to be durable, low-maintenance, and resistant to traffic and cleaning influences.

ROMEX® Solution

For grouting the newly laid natural stone surfaces, the ROMEX® product ROMPOX® - VERKEHR V2 was selected. The system is ideally suited for high-traffic and downtown areas and ensures a permanently stable joint solution.

The high-strength joint supports the grouting and helps prevent individual stones from shifting. Additionally, it prevents weed growth and protects the surface in the long term against washout caused by vacuum sweepers and material loss. At the same time, the high-quality appearance of the natural stone surfaces is permanently preserved—even with intensive use and regular cleaning.
