Construction of a new historic educational facility

In the spring of 2017, paving work was completed in the courtyard of the newly built Frankfurt Historical Museum on Römerberg. As part of a new museum building of significant architectural and urban planning importance, the courtyard had to be designed to be both aesthetically high-quality and technically durable.

Following comprehensive project consultation, the decision was made to use the proven ROMEX® bedding and jointing system RSG5 with a 5-year ROMEX® system warranty.

Requirements and Challenges

A particular planning challenge arose due to a vaulted cellar located beneath the paving area. Because of this structural situation, a weight restriction with a permissible volume load of 19 kN/m³ had to be taken into account. The entire paving structure therefore had to be carefully adapted to the structural requirements.

At the same time, a permanently stable bedding, a secure bond between the stone and the bedding mortar, and high-quality, durable jointing were required. The area was to meet the functional requirements of a public museum space while harmoniously blending into the architectural surroundings of the Römerberg.

ROMEX® Solution

The ROMEX® System RSG5 was used, consisting of ROMEX® - TRASS BEDDING, ROMEX® - ADHESIVE SLURRY, and the synthetic resin paving joint mortar ROMPOX® - D1 in the color basalt.

The ROMEX® - TRASS BEDDING formed the stable and drainable foundation of the paving structure. The ROMEX® ADHESIVE SLURRY ensured the necessary bond between the paving stones and the bedding. ROMPOX® D1 was used for the joint filling—a two-component synthetic resin paving joint mortar that has proven itself for over 25 years and stands for durable, resilient, and visually high-quality paving surfaces.

Thanks to the system-compatible construction, a technically reliable solution was implemented that meets the specific requirements of the courtyard and is simultaneously covered by the ROMEX® system warranty.
