Renovation in Cologne's bustling Old Town
With a history spanning over 2,000 years, Cologne is not only one of the most populous cities (1.1 million residents) in North Rhine-Westphalia, but also one of its most historic. Salzgasse (in the local dialect: “En d’r Salzgass”) is a typical narrow alleyway in the heart of the historic and tourist-friendly Old Town. Between Heumarkt and the Rhine, the joint sealant in Salzgasse needed to be renovated. As in nearly every city, countless paved areas are in need of renovation and, due to inadequate joint sealant, pose real tripping hazards that often lead to claims for damages. Contamination of the joints—e.g., by cigarette butts and broken glass—makes the otherwise beautiful pavement look very unsightly in the overall picture.
After extensive consultation with ROMEX®, the City of Cologne decided to carry out the renovation using the two-component paving joint mortar ROMPOX® - D2000, which was applied by a trained installation partner. The material is designed for heavy traffic and is suitable for both new jointing and the renovation of existing paved areas. The particularly fast traffic clearance is an important factor for public areas (at 20°C: walkable after 6 hours, fully load-bearing after 24 hours). The application partner trained by ROMEX® used compressed air and a high-pressure water jet to clean the old, damaged, and dirty joints in the paving. The joints were then grouted with ROMPOX® - D2000. The water permeability of the joints is guaranteed even after grouting!
The new joint is slip-resistant, can withstand street sweepers and high-pressure washers, and is visually appealing. Not only the City of Cologne, but also local residents and restaurant owners are delighted with the new look of the renovated area.
