A system that can even withstand the rigors of cruise ships
Canada Place is one of Canada’s most famous tourist destinations and a landmark of the city of Vancouver. More than 9 million visitors a year, including over 1 million cruise passengers, enter the site via the pier. In 2016, the owner commissioned a comprehensive redesign of the North Point Deck, known as the North Point Plaza. The goal was to create a modern, durable, and aesthetically high-quality space that meets the specific requirements of this internationally frequented location.
The structural and technical requirements of the project were exceptional and presented the planners with complex challenges. Since North Point Plaza is located directly above a parking and office level, the possible installation height of the paving system was severely limited. At the same time, reliable drainage had to be ensured despite minimal slope and high precipitation levels. Added to this were heavy dynamic loads from docking cruise ships, which had to be permanently absorbed by the paving structure. The tight schedule also placed high demands on all parties involved: Construction had to take place in winter within the short window between two cruise seasons. Only a durable, water-permeable, and quick-to-install system solution could meet these specific conditions.
After extensive analysis and intensive product testing, the choice fell on a complete ROMEX® system solution consisting of bedding mortar, bonding slurry, and synthetic resin paving joint mortar. This combination met both the technical requirements for load-bearing capacity, drainage, and durability, as well as the design requirements for a high-quality plaza surface.
Additionally, the project was covered by the ROMEX® System Guarantee (RSG). ROMEX® supported the implementation through on-site training and construction supervision to ensure professional installation and a smooth construction process.
Thanks to the use of the ROMEX® system solution, a technically challenging project in the heart of one of North America’s most heavily visited tourist destinations was successfully completed on schedule. Today, North Point Plaza combines high load-bearing capacity, reliable drainage, design quality, and multifunctional use. This makes Canada Place an international benchmark project for durable paving surfaces in high-traffic public spaces.
