Strong bonds for a parliament

55,000 m² of site remediation using ROMPOX® - D2000

Lajos Kossuth Square in Budapest’s 5th district is one of Hungary’s most important public squares. The Hungarian Parliament Building, one of the country’s most famous landmarks, is located directly on the square. Due to its historical, political, and urban significance, the square places particularly high demands on design, functionality, and durability.

Between June 2013 and March 2014, the entire Kossuth Square underwent extensive renovation. As part of this project, approximately 55,000 m² of the square’s surface was re-grouted.

Requirements and Challenges

The renovation of such a large and prestigious city square required a jointing solution that would do justice to both the historical significance of the site and the functional requirements of the public space. The square is frequented daily by locals, tourists, tour groups, and official delegations and must maintain a well-kept and high-quality appearance at all times.

In addition to blending visually with the historic surroundings, durability, longevity, and ease of maintenance were particularly crucial. The joints had to withstand the daily stresses of the public space while simultaneously ensuring the long-term stabilization of the paved surface.

ROMEX® Solution

ROMPOX® - D2000 was used for the jointing of the renovated square. The two-component paving joint mortar is particularly suitable for heavily used public areas and offers a durable alternative to loose jointing material.

The solid jointing stabilizes the paved area in the long term. At the same time, ROMPOX® - D2000 reduces maintenance requirements, prevents the jointing material from being washed out, and ensures a resilient surface that meets the high demands of a prestigious city square.
